Setting up an Alexa device might seem as simple as plugging it in and connecting to Wi-Fi—but where you place it really matters. Poor placement can affect performance, privacy, and even safety. CNET has outlined the worst spots for your Echo device, along with smarter alternatives.
1. Avoid Bathrooms and Kitchens
Bathrooms may seem convenient, but they’re a risky spot for Alexa. Moisture from showers or sinks can damage the device over time. There’s also the issue of hygiene—flushing toilets can release bacteria into the air, which isn’t ideal around electronics.
Kitchens pose similar risks. Steam, splashes, and grease from cooking can harm your Alexa, and crowded counters increase the chance of accidental spills.
2. Stay Clear of Windows
Placing Alexa near a window might seem harmless, but it opens up a surprising security risk. Someone outside your home could potentially issue voice commands through the glass. That means your smart assistant could be triggered by more than just your voice.
3. Keep Away from Heat Sources
Heat and electronics don’t mix. Avoid placing your Alexa near radiators, space heaters, ovens, or stovetops. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause internal damage to the device—or, in extreme cases, pose a fire risk.
4. Don’t Place It Near the TV
Your television can accidentally wake Alexa with background noise or dialogue, especially during ads or shows that mention wake words. This can lead to unintended responses or even trigger smart home actions you didn’t intend to activate.
Better Placement Options
To get the best performance and keep things safe, consider these alternatives:
- Place the device on a high shelf or mantle to improve microphone range and keep it out of harm’s way.
- Wall-mount Alexa in a central room, away from windows and heat sources.
- If using it in the kitchen, choose a dry spot far from the sink, stove, and kettle.
