Entrepreneurial Spirit in Tech: How Frustration with Comcast Led to a New ISP

In Saline, Michigan, Samuel Herman and Alexander Baciu, driven by frustrations with Comcast's unreliable internet service, have launched their own company, Prime-One. This new local Internet Service Provider (ISP) has started offering high-speed, stable internet connections—with options up to 5 Gbps—across the community. After laying down 75 miles of underground fiber-optic cables, Prime-One is not only enhancing local internet reliability but also motivating competitors like Comcast to improve their services. This entrepreneurial venture marks a significant shift in Saline's internet landscape, promising better services and exciting competitive advancements. For more info, visit Prime-One’s website.

New Local ISP Emerges in Response to Comcast Frustrations

In Saline, Michigan, two brothers-in-law have taken a bold step to fix a problem many residents know too well—unreliable internet. After years of dealing with Comcast’s underwhelming service, Samuel Herman and Alexander Baciu decided enough was enough. So, they launched their own internet service provider: Prime-One.

The Origin Story

Herman and Baciu, both with backgrounds in construction and fibre line installation, were fed up with sluggish upload speeds and spotty service. Instead of waiting for improvement, they took matters into their own hands. By August 2024, they’d secured a contract for IP address assignments and backhaul services, laying the groundwork for their new ISP.

What Prime-One Offers

Prime-One began operations roughly six months ago and already serves over 100 customers. Their packages are straightforward:

  • 500 Mbps for $75/month
  • 5 Gbps for $110/month

All connections run over underground fibre-optic lines, which helps ensure stability and fewer service interruptions—something customers in the area have long been craving.

Building the Network

So far, Prime-One has installed around 75 miles of fibre-optic cable, enough to provide service to about 1,500 homes. But they’re not stopping there. Expansion plans are in motion to reach 4,000 homes, including multi-unit residential buildings.

Shifting the Local Market

Prime-One’s arrival has already made waves. Comcast, once the only option in parts of Saline, has started upgrading its infrastructure in response. Other providers like MetroNet and Frontier are also building out fibre networks, though they haven’t yet entered Prime-One’s immediate territory.

As for what’s next, Herman and Baciu are keeping some of their expansion plans under wraps for now—but it’s clear they’re in it for the long haul.
