Faster Wireless Charging Is Coming
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced an upgrade to the Qi wireless charging standard. Called Qi2, this new version increases the maximum charging power from 15W to 25W. That’s a significant leap, bringing wireless charging closer to the speeds we’re used to with fast wired chargers.
What This Means for Your Devices
With the bump to 25W, compatible devices should see noticeably quicker charging times. It’s a welcome improvement, especially since many modern smartphones and accessories now expect at least 18W for optimal fast charging. Qi2 could finally make wireless charging feel less like a compromise and more like a real alternative to plugging in.
When Will We See It?
Although the 15W Qi standard is still rolling out across devices, Qi2’s 25W spec is expected to speed up adoption. It could appear in more smartphones, smartwatches, and even PC gaming accessories over the next year. That includes things like wireless-charging mouse pads, gaming headsets, and potentially even PC cases with built-in wireless charging pads.
Why Standardisation Matters
One of the biggest benefits of Qi2 is its focus on standardising fast wireless charging. This means better compatibility across different brands and devices, reducing the need for proprietary charging solutions. As more manufacturers adopt the Qi2 standard, users can expect a more consistent and reliable wireless charging experience—no more guessing if your device will charge at full speed.
